Stegastein Viewpoint Guide
Stegastein Viewpoint: A Breathtaking Plunge into the Fjords Guide
Prepare to be awestruck by the Stegastein Viewpoint, a dramatic platform extending 30 meters (98 feet) out over the Aurlandsfjord in Norway. This architectural marvel offers unparalleled panoramic views of the fjord, the surrounding mountains, and the charming village of Aurland below. It's a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Norwegian fjords. The Stegastein Viewpoint was designed by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen and opened in 2006. Its minimalist design blends seamlessly with the natural landscape, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the stunning scenery. The platform is constructed of wood and steel, and its transparent glass end provides a thrilling sense of being suspended in mid-air. The primary activity at Stegastein is, of course, taking in the breathtaking views. Capture stunning photos of the fjord, the mountains, and the village below. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and feel the power of nature. The viewpoint is accessible year-round, but the road leading to it may be closed during heavy snowfall in winter. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly at the viewpoint, Aurlandsvangen, the village below, offers local Norwegian cuisine, including fresh seafood and traditional dishes.
Transportation
The Stegastein Viewpoint is located approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from Aurlandsvangen. The easiest way to reach it is by car. The road is well-maintained but can be narrow and winding in places. During the summer months, there are also tourist buses that operate from Flåm and Aurlandsvangen to the viewpoint.
